It all started when Thomas Moyle had his first project constructing the sidewalks for the Copper Country Mall.

He and his wife, Denise then opened up what is known as Moyle Construction in Houghton.

“I guess we’re a pretty diversified builder here in the Upper Peninsula,” said project manager Andrew Kemper. “We have to capability to be able to do everything. Not only construct a project, but also design it and see it right through.”

Moyle Construction does a wide range of projects across the U.P. and employs about 60 people. They have worked on retail buildings, big box stores, schools, churches and even the healthcare field.

“When you live in the U.P., you’ve got to focus on different projects different markets,” said Barry Givens, Vice President of Engineering and Design. “We’re able to adapt to that, to whatever’s driving the market. That’s what sets us apart.”

Moyle Construction believes that places like UP Health System Portage choose them for their construction projects because they offer something unique.

“Really what makes us successful is people that we have are so diverse in their skills, their talents, their abilities,” said Kemper. “Ultimately we’re able to bring those all together, really meet the needs of virtually any clientele that wants to build anything here around the up.”

With people like this in their office, it’s no surprise they won the Excellence in Construction Award for the state of Michigan, last week.

Ultimately, their goal is to best serve their employees, clients, and the up.

“We like what we do, we’re successful at what we do, and we want to make our customers happy, and we want to keep our clients and staff happy as well,” said Givens.
